Brazilian Zouk (BZouk for short) is a connection-based partner social dance with well-defined basic steps and rhythmic patterns. It was created in Brazil in the early 1990s fusing elements from Lambada, an older Brazilian cultural dance, modern dance, and ballet. It was inspired by and draws its name from Caribbean Zouk music. The overall plasticity of the movements and the range of musical genres it can be danced to make Brazilian Zouk a partner dance that caters to creativity and improvisation.

Urban Kiz (Kiz for short) is a frame-based partner social dance style birthed in Paris, France that fuses elements from Kizomba, Tango, and Hip-hop. The creators of the dance are still alive, young, and the dance is actively evolving. It is one of the most popular social dances in Europe and has spread across the globe in the past 10-12 years.

It can be danced to many styles of music including pop, r&b, hip hop, EDM...at a wide variety of speeds. As a frame-connection based dance you will learn how to connect and communicate with your dance partner with lightness and finesse - skills that translate to and improve you as a dancer in all other dance styles as a light and responsive follow, and/or as a gentle and clear lead. It feels good and is gentle on your body! Urban Kiz is a highly technical dance structured as a language with rules for communicating and moving in partnership -- once you become "fluent" the possibilities for creativity and musical expression are virtually endless.

Our modular beginner Brazilian Zouk dance training program is designed and taught by Will Russ. This program is broken into three 4 - week progressive class blocks:

Basico and Lateral blocks can be taken in either order, and will introduce variations of movement that can be done from these two most fundamental footwork patterns. Capstone: Connections will connect the two and polish you off as a well-rounded dancer; Basico and Lateral are pre-requisites for Capstone.

Will also teaches Intermediate-level series that are thematic. Check the Storefront section to see what's on offer currently - or sign up for our email list to be notified of future zouk classes offered by Will, or our other instructors!

Minimum of 8 students required to hold session. If we do not reach our minimum by session start class will be cancelled and all enrollment fees refunded. There will be no refunds for any other reason.

Enrollment in any progressive training series includes admission to the weekly Tuesday kizzouk practice social (8:30-10pm) during the run of a class series ($30 value for a 5-week series). We encourage all students to plan to attend the social to practice what you are learning and build muscle memory and confidence - competence comes from training and repetition, confidence comes from competence!
